Maps in Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5 punish lazy defence pretty quickly. Elemental bursts, damage over time, and bad ground effects don't care how tough your chest piece looks. Evasion has the opposite feel. It's smooth, fast, and brilliant while clearing, especially for ranged or mobile builds. Then one hit gets through, and suddenly you remember why backup layers matter.

Recovery Is What Keeps a Fight Alive

Life total gets a lot of attention, but recovery often decides the real outcome. A big health pool with no way to refill it can feel awful in a long boss fight. You take one hit, then another, and now you're playing scared. Regeneration, leech, flasks, on-hit healing, kill recovery, and energy shield recharge all help in different ways. The point isn't to stack every single one. It's to make sure your build has a plan after it gets hit. Because it will get hit. Everyone does.

Control Effects Kill More Builds Than People Admit

Freeze, stun, shock, heavy slows, and other control effects are easy to ignore until they ruin a map. Losing control for half a second can be worse than the damage itself, because that's when the second and third hits land. Freeze immunity, stun avoidance, reduced slow effect, and reliable movement are not luxury upgrades anymore. They're part of staying alive. A good character can move when things get ugly, recover after a mistake, and reposition before the arena turns into a mess.

Build Defence Before Chasing Bigger Numbers

The smartest upgrade path for most players is simple enough: fix resistances, build steady recovery, choose armour or evasion as your base, then add protection against control effects and better movement. Damage can wait a bit. A dead character farms nothing, even if the tooltip looks impressive.
